Rod Sirling Tribute

This week, PBS is running a documentary about the creator of The Twilight Zone. (Information here.) Since its PBS, you need to check your local listing for day and time, although I gather it is showing tonight on most stations.

P.S. - Snow Day in Portland!

Link O Rama

  • Beef: it's what makes dinner more expensive. A USA Today report shows that the prices of groceries went up about 3% this year and will go up another 3% next year. Today's printed copy of the paper (but not posted online) breaks down the costs by item and shows that the price of meat and eggs has increased a whopping 16.6% this year.
  • Just in case you are curious to know exactly who can afford those kind of price increases, CBS tells us what the top 10 overpaid jobs in America are.
  • If you think that traffic laws are messy, you should see what happens when you break the second law of thermodynamics.
  • Just in case you've forgotten what you learned in U.S. history, this animated GIF gives a 30 second rundown of how our nation's land was once divided.
  • Some cool pictures from some fancy new telescope we launched into space.

Keiko is Dead :-(

Keiko, the killer whale, died yesterday of pneumonia. Most people remember Keiko from the movie Free Willie, but he was a bit more of a celebrity here in Oregon as he spent a couple of years living at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. (I went to see him about a month before they moved him to Norway.)

Also, since I posted an article about the greenhouse effect a few days ago, it would also be a good idea to read the facts about the phenomenon on The Bad Greenhouse page. Lots of other good reading can be found at the general Bad Science page.

Going Underground - In Real Life

Brett's buddy Aaron found an interesting article about all the things that go on under Moscow, like people who actually live underground and the search for Ivan the Terrible's lost library. Pretty weird stuff, but definintely an interesting read.

I'm this many

This is a little something I thought my bestest friend Davy would get a kick out of. This article over at Ars Technica explains that a new prime number has been found, 2^20996011-1. It's a big number, it seems, weighing in at 6,632,430 digits long. Even I could appriciate that.

More Microsoft Taking-overness

We already know that Microsoft wants to take over every PC in the world. Now they want to take over your car too. Of course, the fact that Mitsubishi already uses their software might explain why the auto-transmission my Lancer never knows when to change gears.
